Top Leaders Think Differently

Last week over lunch a client of mine gave an amazing rant over his disdain for the phrase “I’m busy”.

“When I ask someone how they’re doing and they say ‘I’m busy’, I want to smack ‘em. When did we set our sights on being busy? Shouldn’t we aspire to something more than simply being busy? If the goal for my managers was to be busy I would be out of business”!

I agreed with him, 1000%. (No, that’s not a typo).

In 2019 the Toronto Raptors won 58 games – the Phoenix Suns won 17. The leaders and managers of both organizations were equally busy, right?

Shouldn’t it be about relentlessly pursuing more value for your customers, or constantly innovating your products and systems, or creating much better tomorrows for all your staff, or consistently generating exceptional profit?

Why not make it about all of these things? Top-performing businesses do!

If it was simply about being busy, we’d all still be living in caves, chasing our next meal.

Productivity and performance matter.

Why then, are some businesses top performers? What sets them so far apart?

Top-performing businesses are unique in 3 very significant ways;

  1. The way their leaders think, act, and keep score is profoundly different.
  2. They consistently inspire their customers and employees.
  3. They consistently generate exceptional returns

Consistently generating exceptional returns is an opportunity available to all businesses that are open-minded in regard to how they think, act, and keep score.

“After all is said and done, a lot more is said than done”.

This is the ‘Gold Standard’ quote for those who lead top performing businesses. Delivering business excellence is about taking action – specific, focused, intentional acts, all designed to create systems that consistently generate exceptional profit.
